Lincolnshire YMCA Youth Work

Our youth work department at Stamford has grown, from providing two open access youth clubs a week, to working in a local secondary school providing youth achievement awards to 24 students who are on the verge of exclusion. We also provide the same programme to students from Stamford College who are on the alternative studies programme for 14-16 year olds and who have been permanently excluded from school. These programmes have been successful on a personal level to the young people, and many have achieved a great deal.

We have also been the lead organisation in a new project called SNAP Dance (Say No And Phone) SNAP are monthly dance nights for 12-17 year olds, and are designed to show young people they can have a good night out without drugs and alcohol. SNAP is held in a local night club, where we invite outside agencies related to our theme, to come and offer young people information if they require it. Our first event was held on the evening of February 14th, Valentines Day, and sexual health was our theme with the NHS, Connexions, and The Teenage Pregnancy Advisory Service, who offered advice and information. Over 100 young people enjoyed the evening with many taking part in our fun game ‘Blind Date’.  Other SNAP Dances have included a Summer Ball and last Autumn we were lucky enough to have celebrity Fran Cosgrove visit for the evening.  Fran, pictured above, spent the evening tirelessly signing autographs and posing for photos.
