Following the recent approval of plans to build a new Night Shelter, YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust are inviting Lincoln residents to spend a night sleeping rough in the grounds of Lincoln Cathedral.
With plans approved, YMCA Lincolnshire & The Nomad Trust are now challenged with raising the funds to build the new shelter, and they need the local community’s help.
Sleep Easy is an annual event supported by YMCA’s across the country, where sponsored participants spend a night making a shelter from cardboard boxes and experiencing what it feels like to spend a night on the streets.
In 2015, 231 homeless people requested accommodation in Lincoln, with YMCA Lincolnshire & The Nomad Trust supporting 152 in accommodation and housing support.
YMCA Lincolnshire currently operates 129 units of accommodation, with The Nomad Trust’s Night Shelter housing 21 Emergency beds. The charity also offers accommodation advice, supported housing for veterans and various other charitable and commercial services across the county.
The new Night Shelter will provide 16 en-suite bedrooms offering 32 emergency bed spaces, alongside 40 apartments over two floors for temporary residents. The build will also see a community café, meeting room, training facilities and a clinical room, to complement YMCA Lincolnshire’s St Rumbold Street site located opposite the location of the new build.
Speaking of the new build, Malcolm Barham, CEO of YMCA Lincolnshire, said ‘it would also mean that the Nomad Trust would, for the first time, be able to offer daytime services’; alongside accessible emergency accommodation, day services have been ‘desperately needed’ in Lincoln.
As well as raising vital funds to secure the implementation of these plans, in turn supporting the homeless of Lincoln, we hope the Sleep Easy Lincoln 2016 Event will raise awareness of the homelessness across the county.
