Richard- Combined Level 2 Gym & Level 3 PT Certificate, Studio Cycling, Kettlebells

How did you find the learning experience at YMCA Lincolnshire?

I had the same instructor for all courses (Trev Mealing) who made them all very easy to understand, in particular the theory parts of courses which I would have found the most difficult.

The online seminars were especially helpful for this, which I watched recorded as opposed to live. This was a great way to have difficult sections broken down and explained in a more understandable way and then make my own notes for revision.

He also made the attendance segments of the courses very enjoyable, which I find is always a massive bonus if attending knowledge based learning days.

What have you been doing since you left?

I have since gone on to work the last 2 years as a freelance gym instructor in my local gym, mainly as a studio cycling instructor, but also instructing other classes such as circuits, abs and the kettlebells course completed above.

I am now also putting on my own weekly Pilates classes. Although I didn’t achieve this qualification with Trev and YMCA Lincolnshire, I wouldn’t be doing it if I hadn’t achieved the initial qualifications with them.

How would you describe the course in 3 Words?

Informative, Interesting, Enjoyable

  • Informative - I learned a lot of new information during the above courses, which is not something I get the chance to do so much in my 30’s.
  • Interesting – All of the courses completed were full of information which I found relevant and well worth knowing, including the mandatory information and extra bits added in by Trev.
  • Enjoyable – I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the courses completed, including both the practical and knowledge aspects.

Emma - Combined Level 2 Gym & Level 3 PT Certificate, Kettlebells certificate

How did you find the learning experience at YMCA Lincolnshire?

The delivery of the course was very effective; both in terms of the online Edmodo resources and the face-to-face teaching that took place on the assessment weekends. I found the revision recap sessions prior to the exams particularly helpful.

I found Trevor’s informal teaching style to be very effective and I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed the revision recaps and practical teaching sessions that were delivered.

What have you been doing since you left?

Since obtaining my Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification in October 2016 I have been coaching  (self-employed) women’s strength training and powerlifting sessions at Darkside Training, Lincoln.

Having completed my Level 3 PT course I am now in the process of becoming a self-employed personal trainer and am setting up my own small fitness studio at my home, with a view to offering PT services to clients in the very near future. I am eventually hoping to become a personal trainer on a full-time basis.

Kim -  Level 2 Fitness Instructor Certificate

How did you find the training course at YMCA Lincolnshire

I enjoyed interacting with the other members of our training course and how relaxed it was, I think this made learning easier for me as I didn’t feel intimidated. The layout of the course also worked well and although it was 1 full day of classroom work the rest of the weekend was practical learning which made it more fun.

What have you been doing since you left?

Since gaining my qualifications on this course I have started working within a new up and coming gym where I have a few regular clients for PT sessions each week.

If your were to sum up your learning experience in 3 words, what would you choose? And why?

-Fun, Interesting, Eye opening.

I think my learning experience bought me out of my shell as I am usually quite a shy person, everyone made you feel welcome.

The way the teaching was delivered was made fun, full of group activities so that we had our own input on our learning. I was also very eye opening, we have no doubt all been to a gym and learned how to train in some way or another but there’s so much more to training that we don’t learn by just attending the gym. learning proper technique has improved my own training and now I can pass correct technique on to my clients
