New YMCA Health Visitor Scheme Improving Support for Gainsborough Families

A Monthly Health Visitor Project at YMCA Beginnings Daycare is providing a much needed care service for Gainsborough Families and their babies.

Last Year the Guardian reported that one in four babies born in the UK are not receiving mandatory checkups from health visitors during the first two years of their life. YMCA Beginnings Daycare, a nursery rated ‘good’ by OFSTED are now going above and beyond to combat this in the Gainsborough area.

In a pilot scheme with the Health Visiting Team, YMCA Beginnings Daycare are offering a monthly clinic to enable families to access the Health Visitors for general check-up and their child’s 8 month and 2 year checks in a convenient uphill location.

The service has already proved to be in demand with 5 families visiting the pop up clinic on its first date in November and booking already being taken for the December clinic..

Zara Smith, Senior Childcare Manager at YMCA said: “Here at YMCA Beginnings Daycare we aim to support families within our community, being a parent is one of the most fulfilling yet challenging roles and we want to be here to assist parents through that journey as much as we can.”

All families in the local community are welcome to book an appointment, not only those families using the nursery services. The clinic generally runs on the 3rd Thursday of the month – the dates for the next few months are as follows:

20 Dec 2018

17 Jan 2019

21 Feb 2019

21 Mar 2019

In addition to accessing the heath visiting team, YMCA Beginnings Daycare are also aiming to provide access to useful information and resources to support families as their child grows and develops. This includes information sheets and workshops for a variety of subjects such as:

  • Toilet Training
  • Dental Health
  • The importance of talking to your child
  • Reading with your child
  • Sleep Clinic – help with routines
  • Weaning
  • Healthy Eating
  • Behaviour Management
  • School readiness
  • On-line safety
  • Applying for school places

In the future the team aspire to have a set of baby weighing scales on site to support families to continue monitoring their baby’s growth and development as frequently as they want. They also have ambitions to provide an internet enabled PC to allow parents and careers to apply for childcare funding, apply for school places, develop their CV’s and much more.

YMCA Beginnings Daycare are desperately looking for a donation of a baby weighing scale and a pc with printer to further develop these community projects. If you feel that you are able to help please contact Zara Smith at zara.smith@lincsymca.co.uk
