Youth Worker Billy had a great time turning a humble room into a miniature universe this week.
As part of our home education programme at YMCA Lincolnshire, he has been delivering a series of science sessions exploring space, the Solar System, and how Earth works as a planet.

This session focused on some big ideas:

• Why day turns into night

• How Earth’s rotation creates the movement of the Sun across the sky

• Why shadows change throughout the day

• And how the tilt of the Earth creates the four seasons

Rather than just teaching the theory, we transformed the space into an immersive environment – projecting stars across the walls and ceiling and using physical models to demonstrate how Earth moves in space.

For many young people, concepts like planetary rotation, axial tilt, and seasonal change can feel abstract. Creating a visual and experiential learning environment helps bring those ideas to life and sparks curiosity about science and the wider universe.

Moments like this are a reminder of how powerful informal education can be when creativity and science meet.

Youth work isn’t just about support and safeguarding – it’s also about inspiring young people to explore, question, and understand the world around them.
